With his background knowledge, he was soon made a First Engineer over older men who acted as his second. He flew first over the Pacific in a Martin M130. During WW II while in the Naval Reserve, he flew on the military missions operated by Pan Am to American bases in the Pacific. He retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant.

He flew as the First Engineer on the first flight into Tokyo after the war. Later he was transferred to New York to fly to Europe and Africa, On his return to San Francisco, he was sent to Hong Kong to be in charge of the engineers stationed there till a permanent one could be installed. Again back to San Francisco and up to Seattle to fly the Alaskan Route. By this time he was a check engineer. PAA asked him to be with Boeing to make sure the engineer station on the 747 was to PAA’s specifications.

To be able to fly on the 747 Lew transferred back to San Francisco. He temporarily commuted to Los Angles to fly to Panama. He also was assigned to Columbia to help them figure out why they were having engine troubles with their airplanes. He spent much time in Miami checking pilots and engineers when PAA moved their simulator training base there. He retired in 1983 after 40 years with the airline.
