National Council Elections

National Council is the volunteer board of directors of the Fraternity consisting of eight Triangle alumni. This group is responsible for setting strategies and measuring progress toward strategy-level goals that affect all of Triangle. National Council acts to foster the financial stability and growth of Triangle and acts to continuously improve the amount of member participation and investment in Triangle.

Like the board of directors for any nonprofit or membership organization, National Council leads the organization. It is the responsibility of this group to govern and lead Triangle.

National Council is responsible for defining, setting, and maintaining the strategic direction for Triangle Fraternity. The council members are responsible for evaluating the needs and desires of Triangle members and chapters. Annually, members of the Fraternity elect the President and Vice President for one-year terms. Alumni members serving two-year terms fill the four remaining Council seats, with two men elected each year.

The Headquarters staff, lead by the Executive Director, is responsible for implementing the strategy with appropriate tactical action, as well as measuring tactical-level progress. The Headquarters staff plans ways to achieve the goals set out in the strategy defined by National Council. This is different role from the past where National Council monitored and managed the day-to-day operations of the Fraternity.

This year, the Nominating Committee was made up of seven alumni members, including:

Kurt Over pitt83, Kevin Fong ucla84, Paul Boyle tsu87, Tim Eiler minn87, James Cotton tol02, and Al Evon ar88.

Each candidate was asked to submit a brief biographical statement highlighting his Triangle experience, a statement as to why they seek a position on National Council, and to thoughts on each of the strategic areas within the Fraternity’s strategic plan. Below are comments from each of these men.

The nominating committee has nominated the following brothers for the office of President, Vice President, and two Councilmen positions. The nominating committee has nominated:

  • Kevin Robertson marq92, President
  • John Gargani pitt82, Vice President
  • Jeff Cottrell mtu94, Councilman
  • Andy Goss lou00, Councilman

In addition, Brother Carl Meglan os56, expressed interest in running for a Councilman position but was not nominated by the committee.

Nominated for President is Kevin Robertson marq92….

  • Education: B.A. Marquette University
  • Employer: HSA Bank, a Division of Webster Financial Corporation
  • Occupation: Senior Vice President, National Sales & National Principal (NASD)

Goals for Triangle: Implementation of the Strategic Plans and leading the Fraternity forward in the 21st century. National Council needs to enact a strong leadership role to guide us forward and make real progress for the betterment of the Fraternity as a whole. We need to accomplish goals, not just plan for them. We also need to secure the financial future of the National organization and provide the best services in the fraternal world to our members.

Nominated for Vice President is John Gargani pitt82….

  • Education: B.S. Chemical Engineering with Petroleum Specialization, University of Pittsburgh
  • Employer: Southwestern Energy Company
  • Occupation: Vice President, Economic Planning & Acquisitions

Goals for Triangle: In our second century I would like to see Triangle Fraternity improve and grow. First, we need to continue promoting the growth of our existing chapters. In the last year we have begun to develop momentum with our expansion on new campuses. We need to continue to push in this area. we need to ensure the financial security of the Fraternity through increased Alumni contributions and overseeing risk management of the Active organizations. I would like to see us put more emphasis on the 50+ year Alumni stage of our brothers' lives recognized Alumni have different motivations than Actives. In particular, we need to do a better job of establishing networking opportunities between brothers for professional development. I want to see more Alumni at National Conventions and serving on Chapter Boards.

Running for a position on the National Council is Jeff Cottrell mtu94

  • Education: B.S. Chemical Engineering, Michigan Technological University
  • Employer: Eli Lilly and Company
  • Occupation: Computer Systems Quality Assurance

Goals for Triangle: Focus our efforts - Triangle, like much of the rest of the fraternity world, is dealing with lower than desired membership. While I can list several issues National Council could spend time dealing with, I believe it is vital for our survival to focus our energy on the things that will get us the biggest bang for our buck. This will mean making some tough and potentially unpopular decisions. Preach the Plan - it is my understanding that National Council (in recent years) has put together a solid strategic plan for Triangle to move toward the Centennial Celebration and beyond. I've seen bits and pieces of this plan in action. What I am proposing is a more extroverted approach in talking about the plan. I want to see talking points that National Council is bringing up at every opportunity to pound home the ways that everyone can help Triangle Succeed. National in the House - I miss the days National Councilmen paid visits to chapter houses. I'm not saying that every member of National Council needs to visit a chapter or that the visits need to be formal in nature, but I would like to hear more stories of National Councilmen visiting chapters or helping coordinate regional meetings between multiple chapters.

Running for a position on the National Council is Andy Goss lou00

  • Education: B.S. Computer Engineering and Computer Science, University of Louisville
  • Employer: Appriss, Inc.
  • Occupation: System Integration Engineer

Goals for Triangle: I want to see Triangle strengthen our current chapters to ensure they continue to grow and prosper. To that end, I would like to see relationships forged between successful and struggling chapters. I want to see Triangle expand or return to five campuses in the next five years. Its amazing how quickly an interest group can become a colony and a colony a chapter if the conditions are right and the motivation exists. I want to see us celebrate achievement more consistently. That is to say, I would like more of our chapters to work toward the national recognition they deserve. I want the National Organization as a whole to be on the lookout for the next Leadership Advantage - the next "thing" one of our chapters is doing well that could spread across all chapters and bring us greater success. Finally, I want to see the National Organization be strengthened financially and to continue the traditions of the Triangle Review in my role as Assistant Editor.
